Phalloplasty surgeries are complicated and take place in several stages, each of which requires a different recovery phase. If a patient has difficulties or has to have associated, extra surgeries, like a hysterectomy, vaginectomy, scrotoplasty, mons resection, or the insertion of an erectile or testicular expander/implant(s), the healing process may take longer. Patients often feel frustrated and other emotions as they heal following gender-affirming surgery. We have put together a handbook on the following subjects to assist you in getting ready for your phalloplasty recovery:
- The schedule for recuperation
- Signs of trouble: when should I call my provider?
- The process of getting better emotionally: dealing with sadness after surgery
- How to avoid and handle problems from surgery
We understand that it is hard to wait through pain, discomfort, and swelling to see or enjoy the effects of our surgery. This is especially true when bottom surgery results are so closely linked to our sense of self, constitute a key aspect of our sexual pleasure, and are at the very center of our bodies. We have to put our normal daily activities on hold while we rest and heal, which is hard. We hope that this information will assist you and your care team (friends, family, and mental health experts) in avoiding problems and making the rehabilitation process as easy as possible.
If you are currently a GCC patient, we invite you to use our secure patient portal to contact your surgical care team with any questions you may have. We care about every little thing. We promise to do everything we can to help you heal so that you can feel even more at home in your body after surgery.
Phalloplasty In Dubai
Phalloplasty in Dubai is a specialized reconstructive surgical procedure performed to create, repair, or reshape the penis. It may be recommended for individuals who have experienced trauma, congenital conditions, or require reconstruction for medical or functional reasons. The procedure typically involves transferring tissue from another part of the body, such as the forearm or thigh, to form the penile structure.
The Phalloplasty Recovery Timeline
Your Initial Hospital Stay:
- Patients should expect to stay in the hospital for six nights after having an RFF and ALT phalloplasty. After the first stage of groin flap phalloplasty, patients should plan to stay in the hospital for two nights. This is when the most discomfort, swelling, and bruising will happen.
- Patients who have a radial forearm free (RFF) flap phalloplasty will start occupational therapy to assist their arm in healing and restore its range of motion.
Once Discharged From the Hospital:
- Plan a pleasant place for recovery, like one with easy access to a bathroom and a few steps.
- You can expect some pain and discomfort, but you can control it with prescription or some over-the-counter drugs.
- To reduce edema after surgery, it is best to eat a balanced diet low in sodium.
- To minimize problems like too much bleeding or bruising, activity should be kept to a minimum.
Within 1-3 Weeks After Surgery:
- You should expect some bleeding from the surgery site, but if it gets too bad, you should call your healthcare team right away.
- Most of the time, swelling and bruises become better in two weeks and go away completely in six weeks.
- You might need a urinary catheter for bottom surgery that involves the urethra. The catheter may continue in place for two to three weeks to let the region heal by draining urine from the bladder. An indwelling catheter doesn’t hurt, although it could take some getting used to for certain people. Some people may have bladder spasms, which can be painful but can be treated with some drugs.
- After the patient’s forearm or thigh flap wound has healed, they will start wearing a silicone dressing to help the swelling go down and the scar heal. Patients will continue with occupational therapy for several weeks to help them heal faster.
Resuming Physical Activity:
- You shouldn’t lift more than ten pounds for the first four weeks (while you recuperate).
- We strongly suggest that you don’t move your legs too far apart when you get out of bed or get into the car. This will help keep your wound from stretching too much.
- After around 7 to 11 weeks (depending on how well you heal), you can slowly start to add exercise and more strenuous activities like running or yard work.
Resuming Sexual Activity:
- Patients who get phalloplasty should not touch or stimulate their penis with their hands or mouth for at least 2-4 months, or longer if they are still healing. Your new penis is still healing, which makes it more likely to get an infection.
- We tell our patients to take things slowly and carefully at first and to talk to their partner(s) clearly and openly.
- Patients should acquire their surgeon’s permission after 2-4 months before doing any kind of manual or oral stimulation of the phallus. If you want to use a pump or silicone erectile sleeve for penetrative sex, please talk to your surgeon about this as well.
Warning Signs: When Should I Contact My Provider?
These are some possible indicators that you need to see a doctor right now. Call our on-call medical team, a local provider, or go to the emergency department if:
- Your surgical dressings are drenched with a lot of blood, which could mean that you are bleeding too much.
- Medications aren’t helping with your agony.
- You can’t keep fluids down, and/or you throw up.
- You see yellowish discharge coming from your incision sites, and you have a fever. This could mean you have an infection.
- You experience swelling in your groin or lower leg that isn’t typical. This could mean you have blood clots.
- Your new penis has a different color or skin that changes in ways other than the bruising and swelling that will last for the first few weeks after surgery.

The Emotional Recovery Process: Dealing With Postoperative Depression
Reconstructive surgery is usually a life-changing and good thing. Even while it’s exciting to think about the future, it’s vital to remember that you can feel bad for a short time following surgery. This is often called “post-operative depression.”
Not everyone gets post-operative depression, but when they do, it can be hard to understand. It’s vital to remember that not all feelings after surgery are good at first. Some people just feel tired because their bodies are using all of their energy to mend the wounds from surgery. There are many additional reasons why people feel bad after surgery. For example, they can be impatient because they haven’t seen their final results yet, they might be in pain or discomfort, they might not be able to do their normal activities, or they might have a lot of time to think while they are in bed. While your body heals, it’s normal to feel unhappy, frustrated, defeated, and even regretful for a short period. We tell our patients to be kind and patient with their bodies while they heal from surgery, to talk about their feelings with their support network, and to call us with any medical problems that come up.
Surgical Complications: Prevention And Treatment
With time and good care at home, the most common problems, including opening a wound, go away. It’s normal to feel frustrated, upset, or even regretful when things go wrong, even then. It’s hard to wait longer for things to get better, like when you can go back to work, sit comfortably for long periods of time without a supportive cushion, or have sex. As your body heals from surgery, we advise you to be patient, draw on your support network (friends, family, and/or mental health experts), and have faith that any pain, discomfort, and swelling will go away with the right care.
Patients who have urinary lengthening will likely feel some discomfort, including bladder spasms, when using a catheter. Some urinary problems may go away on their own over time. For example, fistulas or minor leaks in the new urethra are generally found within the first 7 weeks after surgery. With care at home, they might shut up over time. Please be aware that urethral fistulas, often known as urine leaks, are not medical emergencies. If a person’s urinary tract is blocked and they can’t urinate, they need to go to the nearest emergency room or urgent care center.
If you have any worries about irregular urination, such as blood in the urine, more straining, urinary retention, frequent urination, or a urinary tract infection, please tell your surgical team and local provider(s). We don’t care how minor your worry is. We promise to do everything we can to help you get through the hard parts of your recovery.
Also, even small movements that strain the groin might cause the wound to open up. Patients may feel frustrated and even worried when a wound opens up because it can take longer for them to heal and get back to their normal lives. We want scrotoplasty patients to be extra careful about this danger. Fortunately, basic wound care will fix the problem over time. We don’t stitch up reopened wounds following bottom surgery because there is a risk of infection. Because of these things, we think your care team should help you learn to be patient, kind, and trusting with your body while it heals.
Before your surgery, we will provide you with recovery recommendations to assist you in dealing with and minimizing issues. These will include things like not smoking or drinking alcohol, limiting your mobility, and taking care of your other medical concerns. If you have a problem, you can always count on our devoted staff to help you.
Swelling, Bruising, And Scarring After Phalloplasty
Swelling and bruising are common after phalloplasty and usually peak within the first few days before gradually improving over the following weeks. Scars may initially appear firm or slightly raised but tend to fade over time with proper care. Following post-operative instructions, maintaining hygiene, and attending follow-up visits can support smoother healing and better long-term results.
Downtime For Desk Jobs After Phalloplasty
Most patients may return to desk-based work within three to four weeks, depending on their healing progress and the complexity of the procedure. However, physically demanding activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for several more weeks. Gradual return to normal routines helps protect surgical results and promotes a safer recovery process.
Phalloplasty Recovery Dos And Donts
Do follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully, keep the surgical area clean, attend scheduled follow-up appointments, and allow your body adequate time to rest and heal. Don’t engage in strenuous exercise, lift heavy objects, smoke, or ignore unusual symptoms. Adhering to these guidelines helps reduce complications and supports a smoother recovery journey.
