Is Labiaplasty Under Local Anesthetic Possible?

is Labiaplasty Under Local Anesthetic Possible

In the last few years, labiaplasty or labial reduction has become a more common procedure. Patients often ask if labiaplasty can be done with local anesthesia. Labiaplasty can definitely be done with local anesthesia. This is the most common kind of anesthetic I use for labiaplasty in my office.

Patients are told to put a topical anesthetic (Emla cream) on the area about an hour before the labiaplasty is done with local anesthesia. This makes the feeling less strong while the local anesthetic is being injected. At the beginning of the procedure, a series of small needles is put in, which takes about 9 to 19 seconds. After the freezing has set in, you can relax for about ten minutes while it works. During the procedure itself, you shouldn’t feel any pain or discomfort.

In other places, labiaplasty may be done regularly with either conscious sedation or general anesthesia. During conscious sedation, drugs are given to your whole body to change your level of consciousness during the small procedure. You don’t need to be intubated, and you can still protect and keep your own airway open. During general anesthesia, you get more and more sedative medicine until you need to be intubated. During the procedure, you are completely asleep, and a breathing machine controls your airway.

Labiaplasty In Dubai

Labiaplasty in Dubai is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces the size of the labia minora or labia majora to improve comfort, appearance, and overall confidence. It is commonly performed for women who experience irritation, discomfort during physical activities, hygiene difficulties, or self-consciousness due to enlarged or uneven labia. The procedure is typically done under local or general anesthesia and usually takes about one to two hours, depending on the individual case. Labiaplasty can provide both functional and cosmetic benefits, such as reducing friction, improving comfort in tight clothing, and enhancing the natural contour of the intimate area. Recovery is generally straightforward, with most patients returning to normal daily activities within a few days and experiencing full healing over the following weeks.

Labiaplasty with local anesthesia may have some benefits over these other types of anesthesia:

Less Post-Operative Nausea

Labiaplasty under local anesthesia lowers the chance of nausea after surgery, which is a common side effect of general anesthesia and conscious sedation. After labiaplasty under local anesthesia, nausea is most likely caused by the prescription pain medicine. You should take this medicine with food and only when you need to. After labiaplasty, it is also a good idea to stop taking prescription painkillers as soon as possible. Most patients don’t need any prescription pain medicine for 24-48 hours after surgery. At that point, you can switch to plain or extra-strength Tylenol and then stop taking it when you can.

No Need For A Companion On The Day Of Surgery

You may still want a family member or close friend to go with you on the day of your minor procedure, but it is not necessary for patients who are having labiaplasty under local anesthesia. After surgery, you should go straight home to start putting cold compresses on your body. You can drive yourself home afterward if you want, or you can take a taxi to get there yourself since no systemic medications are given.

Labiaplasty Under Local Anesthetic Provides Excellent Pain Control For Several Hours Post-Operatively

After labiaplasty, the local anesthetic lasts for a few hours. After labiaplasty, I suggest that patients take Tylenol #3 as soon as they get home. This helps you get through the time when the local anesthetic wears off. In addition to helping with pain in the area after labiaplasty, the cold compresses should be used as often as possible in the first 47 hours after surgery.

Patient Remains Awake And Alert During The Procedure

For a lot of patients, having labiaplasty done with local anesthesia may be less stressful. You stay awake and alert during the procedure, which gives you more time to go over the instructions for taking care of the wound and changing your activities in great detail.

Lower Risk Of Airway Complications For Labiaplasty Under Local Anesthetic

There is a risk of airway compromise when labiaplasty is done with conscious sedation. As a plastic surgeon, labiaplasty is now one of the most common surgeries I do. Almost all labiaplasties have been done with local anesthesia and have gone very well. If a patient wants either conscious sedation or general anesthesia after our talk, a board-certified anesthesiologist will be there to give them the drugs and keep a close eye on them during the surgery. In these situations, I believe that the safest thing to do is to have your surgery done alone and have an airway expert there to handle either the conscious sedation or the general anesthesia. When getting elective cosmetic surgery outside of a hospital, it’s important to ask about this.

FAQs

What Happens During A Labiaplasty?

One or both of your labia will be trimmed during your labiaplasty procedure to improve their appearance and comfort. If asymmetry is present, but you are content with the smaller of the two labia, only one may be trimmed to match the other and restore symmetry to your vagina. In other instances, women opt to have both labia reshaped to achieve smaller, smoother vaginal lips. We acknowledge that this procedure may induce discomfort as a result of the targeted region; however, we will make every effort to ensure that you are at ease and secure during the procedure. Our female plastic surgeons are able to empathize with your apprehensions and will ensure that you feel at ease during your initial consultation.

The trim method and the wedge method are the two primary methods of labiaplasty, which involve the removal of tissue from distinct regions of the labia. By employing the trim method, your surgeon will remove tissue from the outer edge of the labia to reduce its size and reshape the outer edge. Sutures are affixed to the outer edge of the object once the desired shape and size have been achieved. This method of labiaplasty is widely used due to its ability to provide a smooth, feminine edge to the newly enlarged labia.

Conversely, the wedge method involves the removal of a pie-shaped wedge of tissue from the labia that is slightly inward from the outer edge. This enables the preservation of the natural outer edge of the labia, and the sutures are positioned inward from the outer edge. The wedge method is generally less prevalent than the trim method, as the majority of women prefer to have the outer edge of the labia reshaped and therefore choose the trim method.

Your labiaplasty can be conducted under either general or local anesthesia, both of which mitigate discomfort during the procedure. The labiaplasty procedure will be relatively rapid, regardless of whether you are “put under” or receive a local numbing agent. After cleaning, measuring, and marking the labia for trimming, your surgeon will use a blade to expertly remove excess tissue. The surgical area will be dressed with a bandage, and sutures will be inserted.

Will Labiaplasty Under Local Anesthesia Be Painful?

Many women experience anxiety regarding the discomfort they may experience during their labiaplasty procedure. Ultimately, this is a region of the body that is exceedingly sensitive. The sensation experienced during the surgery will be significantly diminished by combining local anesthesia with sedation. Although some women report that the initial injections of the local anesthesia were slightly uncomfortable and stinging, the majority of our patients were pleasantly surprised to discover that the experience was significantly less painful than they had anticipated. Additionally, the incisions and sutures will be imperceptible after the local anesthesia has been administered. Our patients are exceedingly pleased with their outcomes, and they unanimously assert that the minor discomfort they endured during the procedure was entirely justified.

What Should I Expect During Recovery From Labiaplasty Under Local Anesthesia?

If you have undergone labiaplasty with oral or IV sedation along with local anesthesia, you may experience a brief period of grogginess as the sedative wears off. However, this will be significantly less severe than the sensation you would experience following general anesthesia. Stitches and a bandage will be applied, and you will be permitted to return home the same day as your procedure. We will provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your labia during the healing process prior to the surgery. In order to optimize your healing and outcomes and reduce postoperative swelling and complications, it is crucial to adhere to all postoperative care guidelines. For example, it may be necessary to apply an ointment to the incision sites for the initial few days.

We will provide you with prescription pain medication to take in order to improve your comfort during the initial days following surgery. If the sutures are not absorbable, they may be removed during your follow-up appointment, or they will self-remove within 6 to 9 days of the surgery. Although changes will be apparent immediately after the surgery, the final results will be apparent in a few weeks after the swelling has subsided and the incisions have healed.

Within a week of their surgery, the majority of patients are able to resume their daily activities and work. To ensure that the labia have sufficient time to heal, we recommend that our patients refrain from engaging in vigorous exercise or sexual activity for a few weeks. Many of our patients report that the labiaplasty significantly improves their intimate activities and confidence. You will be delighted with your newly shaped and sized labia. In reality, the majority of individuals express their satisfaction with the procedure’s impact on their lives.
