Proper aftercare after breast reduction surgery is critical for a smooth recovery and optimal results. Patients should adhere to their surgeon’s instructions, wear supportive garments, avoid strenuous activities, and practice good hygiene. Careful aftercare reduces swelling, scarring, and promotes a comfortable, safe recovery.
Breast Reduction In Dubai
Breast Reduction in Dubai is a life-changing procedure that not only improves breast size and shape but also alleviates physical discomfort like back, neck, and shoulder pain. Proper aftercare is essential for getting the best results and ensuring a smooth healing process. Patients are usually advised to wear a supportive surgical bra, avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities, and take prescribed medications to alleviate swelling and discomfort. Keeping incisions clean, attending follow-up appointments, and living a healthy lifestyle all help with recovery. With proper aftercare, patients can enjoy long-term comfort, improved posture, and increased body confidence.
Your Guide To Breast Reduction Aftercare
This guide is for people who have had breast surgery and need help and advice during the first week of their recovery.
General Anaesthesia
You were given general anesthesia as part of your surgery. While in the hospital, anesthesia can make you feel sick or nauseous, but it’s unlikely that you still feel that way after you leave. The anesthesia will still be in your blood after you leave the hospital, which will make you feel a little tired and sleepy.
One thing to keep in mind is that your body will slowly get rid of the anesthesia through your urine and other waste. You might feel jittery or shaky for about 40 minutes while your body gets used to the new situation.
It feels a lot like having too much caffeine, and it’s more noticeable in people who are smaller and lighter.
Movements & Activity
As soon as you get home, try to rest as much as you can and keep any activity and movement to a minimum.
The person who is taking care of you the first night after surgery can be very helpful by:
- Helping you take off your shoes when you get home and change your clothes.
This is to make sure you don’t move your arms up and down, which could hurt.
- Help at the bedside
Please stay in your resting position. People who are taking care of you can bring you water, snacks, and other things so you don’t have to get up and lie down a lot.
This is just a safety measure to keep you from getting dizzy or having pain in your breasts or lower back.

Eating & Drinking Requirements
What To Eat
There is no need to take any special precautions when eating after breast surgery, but you should try to stay away from meats or foods that need to be chewed for a long time to break down.
What To Drink
Try to drink 3 liters of water on the first day. It’s also okay to drink any soft drinks and juices that are at room temperature.
For the first seven days after surgery, don’t drink alcohol or smoke. Both of these make the healing process go slower. The general rule is that anything that makes your recovery take longer can also make your final results worse.
Your Medications
You must take all of the medicines we have given you. You would have gotten these things most of the time:
- Ibuprofen
Every seven hours, take 500 mg. This is to help with any swelling and pain.
- Paracetamol / Codeine
Every four hours, take two tablets. This is to keep any small pain or discomfort under control.
Most patients don’t feel any pain at all, but if you do, don’t worry. You can avoid any pain if you keep taking both of the above pills on time after you leave the hospital.
Please keep taking any other prescription medications you are on as normal after surgery, unless your doctor tells you to stop.
You can start taking all of your herbal supplements, dietary products, vitamins, and so on again 72 hours after your surgery.
After breast surgery, the most common pain happens when the general anesthesia wears off. You may feel pain under the breasts where the cuts were made. This is usually because the skin pulls back to fit the new breast size.
Sleeping At Night
Most patients are used to sleeping on their side, so sleeping on their back the first night is uncomfortable for almost all of them.
It’s important that you sleep on your back with your head slightly raised the first night. This is to make sure that blood flows well, which speeds up healing.
If you end up sleeping on your side for the second night, make sure you are a little higher up with a double pillow and don’t put any weight on your breasts.
Advice About Bruising
After breast reduction surgery, bruising is common. If you got bruised right after surgery and were still in the hospital, you might heal faster. There isn’t much bruising, and it usually happens around the cuts.
- If your swelling or bruising starts more than 48 hours after surgery, you are more likely to have a longer recovery time, and your swelling may last up to 48 hours longer.
- If you don’t have much swelling or bruising after 72 hours, the odds are in your favor. You might not bruise at all, and your recovery might be pretty quick.
Everyone’s way of dealing with trauma is different, so you might heal faster or slower than someone you know who has had this surgery before.
It’s important to remember that swelling and bruising are not scars. Your skin will heal quickly and the bruises will go away completely when you are better. Don’t worry if you bruised more than you thought you would; it will go away completely during your recovery time.
Recovery Tips
Tips And Tricks To Bruising/Swelling
- We might have talked to you about Arnica tablets and cream, which are alternative medicines that can help keep you from getting bruises. You take these pills before and after the surgery, and you can use Arnica Cream up to three times a day after the surgery.
- After your surgery, you must keep taking Ibuprofen to keep the swelling down as much as possible. At your 8-day post-op appointment, we may give you a stronger anti-inflammatory pill to help with any swelling.
How To Change/Remove Your Dressings
You can only take off all of your dressings at your 8-day post-op appointment with our nurses.
Showering & Hygiene
Showering
The first shower would be the night after the surgery.
Important things to remember to do when you shower so you don’t mess up your surgery results:
- Use a hand shower to wash your body, but only use a wet sponge or wipe to clean your breasts and the area around them.
- Make sure the water is warm but not too hot. Make sure your shower or bath isn’t too steamy. Steam could make your breast incisions open up again or get infected.
- For 15 days, do not take any baths, and under no circumstances should you put your breasts or body in water.
- When you wash your hair, keep your head tilted back and make sure that no water gets on your chest.

Checking For Infection
Keep in mind that there is always a chance of airborne pollution causing a bacterial infection in the first few days after surgery when cuts have been made.
If this does happen, which is very rare, you will be given a course of antibiotics to take by mouth for 6 to 8 days.
Getting a bacterial infection is nothing to worry about. As long as you get it treated quickly, it won’t affect the results of your surgery.
If you have bleeding again a week after surgery or a liquid discharge from the incision points, you may be at risk of getting an infection. These situations are uncommon, but please keep them in mind while you heal.
Returning To Your Routine
- For the first week after surgery, stay home and rest. Don’t do any hard workouts.
- You can go back to work 8 to 15 days after your breast surgery.
- You can go back to the gym 15 days after the surgery to do light cardio, running, and biking.
- You can only go back to heavy weight lifting 7 to 9 weeks after surgery. Any lifting before may cause sharp breast pains for a few days.
- You can’t go back to the pool, sauna, or spa for seven weeks. This is to make sure that all of the cuts have healed completely and are not at risk of getting infected.
- You should only think about getting cosmetic treatments for your body again 7 to 14 weeks after your surgery.
