Breast Implants: How Long Do They Last?

How Long Do Breast Implants Last?

This is a very common question that I get from patients seeking breast augmentation in my practice. Patients commonly hear from friends and relatives that breast implants have a โ€œlife spanโ€ and need to be replaced occasionally. They are often thought to need replacing every ten years.

Thankfully, breast implants are not time-limited and do not generally require routine replacement surgery. If the appearance is satisfactory and there are no implant-related medical problems (e.g., rupture, capsular contracture), the implants may be left in place and followed over time.

If saline implants break, patients will experience a decrease in volume on one side. The saline is absorbed by the body. The implant can then be altered to create the desired esthetic look and symmetry. The newer generations of silicone breast implants often feature a silicone gel of higher viscosity than the earlier implants. Rupture of cohesive silicone gel implants often remains in the implant pocket. Clinically, patients may have symptoms (e.g., soreness or edema), and imaging can confirm rupture. Routine mammography, ultrasound, or MRI can reveal silent rupture for those with silicone breast implants. If a silicone breast implant ruptures, it will also need to be exchanged (or removed depending on the patientโ€™s desires). Older generation silicone implants have less viscous gel, and rupture may result in more contamination of the implant pocket. If these implants are ruptured, removal may also require capsulectomy (removal of the fibrous tissue shell that covers the implant).

A recent blog post talked about capsular contracture that can also occur after breast augmentation. Thatโ€™s another reason people may need revision surgery following breast implants. Correction of capsular contracture (perhaps with implant exchange) may be indicated to improve the cosmetic result and lessen associated hardness and/or discomfort.

So, how long do breast implants last . . . ? To summarize, breast implants have no expiration date. Because many young patients choose to have breast implant surgery, it is probable that at some point in oneโ€™s lifetime more surgery will be needed. But it is impossible to say how many procedures or the projected timeline. Many women will have breast implants for decades without experiencing problems that necessitate additional surgery. Others may require revision surgery if difficulties arise regarding the implant itself (rupture, device failure) or healing (capsular contracture in particular).

Breast implants are covered by a limited warranty, often ten years, that covers implant failure or rupture. Breast implants are one of the most prevalent cosmetic operations performed, and imaging facilities are increasingly used to image augmented breasts during normal mammography screening. If you have any concerns about imaging after breast augmentation, it is vital to follow up with your plastic surgeon for additional management.

However, if no problems emerge, a patient may have breast implants for many years and not need any more surgery.

Breast Implants In Dubai

Breast implants in Dubai are designed to enhance volume, improve shape, restore fullness, or correct asymmetry. They are commonly filled with silicone gel or saline and are available in different sizes, shapes, profiles, and surface types. Implant selection depends on factors such as chest width, existing breast tissue, skin quality, body proportions, and aesthetic goals. Breast implants may be used for cosmetic breast augmentation or reconstruction after surgery or injury. The procedure requires careful surgical planning to determine suitable implant placement, such as above or below the chest muscle. Recovery involves temporary swelling, soreness, and activity restrictions. Regular follow-up is important because breast implants are not considered lifetime devices and may eventually require monitoring, revision, or replacement.

Several Factors Influence The Lifespan Of Breast Implants:

Type of Implant

Silicone implants are frequently employed in breast augmentation surgery in Dubai, and the longevity of the implants can be influenced by the material. Silicone implants are generally more durable than saline implants and have a more natural sensation. Nevertheless, both varieties may necessitate replacement at some point in the future.

Placement

How implants age can be influenced by their placement above or below the chest muscle. Implants that are positioned beneath the muscle are somewhat shielded from the natural changes that occur with aging and weight fluctuations, which can extend their lifespan.

Surgical Technique

The longevity of your implants is also influenced by the expertise and technique employed by your plastic surgeon during the initial procedure. The risk of complications such as capsular contracture, which can result in premature implant failure, is mitigated by ensuring proper pocket placement, minimal tissue trauma, and an antiseptic environment.

How to Monitor the Health of Your Breast Implants Over Time

Regular breast self-examinations and adhering to the recommendations of your surgeon, general practitioner, or breast screening clinic for follow-up care are crucial for maintaining the optimal condition of your breast implants. To ensure that we can clinically monitor any visible changes over time, we take photographs of our patients’ breasts at each appointment.

The following changes should be observed by patients to determine whether it is time to consult their plastic surgeon:

  • Discomfort or tenderness in the breast
  • Disruption or alteration of breast shape, including asymmetry in the presence of symmetry
  • Tightening or hardening of the breast
  • Notable shift in implant position
  • Visible wrinkle or bulging

In the event that any of these symptoms manifest, it is imperative to consult with a qualified specialist plastic surgeon, as the early identification of problems can avert more severe subsequent complications.

Factors That Affect How Long Breast Implants Last

Although breast implants are intended to be durable, numerous variables can affect their longevity. While some women may require replacement surgery within a decade, others may not require any intervention for twenty years or more. The longevity of breast implants is influenced by the following important factors:

Lifestyle Impacts on Breast Implants

The pectoralis is an exceptionally robust muscle. High-impact activities or excessive pectoral muscle strain can result in the placement of additional pressure on implants, which may cause them to move or experience pressure and tension. As part of their preoperative consideration process, it is crucial for women who lead particularly active lifestyles to discuss these factors with their surgeon, as they may be more likely to require removal and replacement surgery earlier than other patients.

Impact of Weight Fluctuations on Breast Implants

The appearance and position of breast implants can be affected by substantial weight loss or gain. The loss of breast volume may be a consequence of rapid changes in body fat, which can result in visible implant edges or rippling.

Impact of Pregnancy and Breastfeeding on Breast Implants

The size and contour of natural breast tissue can be altered by hormonal changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding, which may impact the appearance of the implants. In certain instances, women elect to undergo revision surgery after the completion of their family.

Impact of Ageing on Breast Augmentation Results

The epidermis and tissues surrounding the implant may lose elasticity as women age, which can lead to sagging or changes in breast contour. In order to reestablish the distribution of breast volume and the position of the areola on the thorax, a breast lift may be combined with implant replacement.

Which Type Of Breast Implant Feels The Most Natural?

The field of breast augmentation and implants has made significant strides in achieving results that are as natural as possible. Saline breast implants are less natural-feeling than silicone breast implants. Nevertheless, the sensation of silicone and saline breast implants can be considered natural, contingent upon the size of the breast before surgery and the location of their implantation.

Breast implants are positioned beneath the breast tissue and the chest musculature in submuscular placement. This results in the sensation of only your natural breast tissue on top of your breast implants.

Breast implants are positioned between the chest muscles and breast tissue in subglandular placement. Breast implants will appear natural if you possess an abundance of breast tissue. Nevertheless, breast implants may not be entirely concealed by breast tissue if the individual lacks a substantial amount of it. Consequently, your breast implants may not appear or feel natural.

The sensation of breast implants can also be influenced by the type of shell. Breast implant shells are either smooth or textured. The smooth shells are more natural-feeling than textured shells, as they are thinner. Additionally, the movement of smooth shell breast implants is more fluid during physical activity, which is more similar to the movement of natural breast tissue.

Shells that are textured are bulkier than those that are smooth. The texture of textured breast implants is coarser to the touch, akin to the rough side of a sponge. The implants are less likely to rotate or move due to the coarse texture, which aids in their adhesion to the breast tissue. Shells that are filled with texture have a firmer feel than those that are smooth.
