Breast Implant Safety (What Every Dubai Woman Needs To Know)

Breast Implant Safety

When talking about the safety of breast implants, it’s crucial to remember that silicone gel breast implants have undergone more research than any other medical device. In addition to publishing clinical research describing over 999 silicone implant case studies, I have worked as a clinical investigator for cohesive silicone gel implants. I can state with confidence that the risk of complications for women receiving breast implants at my Dubai practice is extremely low.

Naturally, a low risk does not equate to zero risk, and plastic surgeons should always explain these risks to patients who are thinking about getting a breast augmentation. I think it will be beneficial to talk about breast implant safety in this blog post because I take that responsibility very seriously. After giving a quick summary of the history of breast implants, I’ll go over the two most talked-about safety concerns: breast implant illness (BII) and breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

Breast Implants In Dubai

Breast Implants in Dubai are used to enhance the size, shape, and contour of the breasts. They are commonly made of silicone gel or saline and are inserted surgically to achieve a fuller, more proportionate appearance. Implants can be used for cosmetic augmentation, to restore volume lost after pregnancy or weight loss, or for reconstructive purposes following mastectomy.

A Brief History of Modern Breast Implants

Manufacturers have kept improving silicone gel breast implants since surgeons began using them for augmentation in the 1950s. The seventh and eighth generations of silicone gel implants, which are more cohesive than ever, are now available to women having breast augmentation surgery.

When the FDA limited the use of silicone implants from 1991 to 2005, saline implants gained popularity as a substitute. After thorough research showed the implants were safe, the FDA removed those limitations in 2005. Simultaneously, the organization authorized silicone implants for patients who were 21 years of age or older. Cohesive silicone gel implants have grown in popularity since 2005; currently, 86% of patients prefer them to saline implants.

Thanks to new techniques, such as the one I employ for rapid recovery breast augmentation, and improved implant technology, breast augmentation surgery is now safer than ever. Women can feel secure knowing that the FDA closely monitors the safety of breast implants and makes sure those who are thinking about getting one have all the information they need to make an informed decision.

The Safety of Today’s Breast Implants

Approximately 399,999 women in Dubai receive breast implants annually, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. About 99,999 of those women opt for implants to rebuild their breasts following mastectomies to treat or prevent breast cancer, and another 299,999 choose breast augmentation for aesthetic purposes. The great majority of these women don’t have any implant-related health problems.

However, the likelihood of a complication increases with the age of the implants. Leakage or a condition like capsular contracture, in which the capsule of scar tissue surrounding the implant hardens and squeezes the device, could be this complication. Capsular contracture may result in pain and cosmetic distortion of the implant.

However, BIA-ALCL and BII are the safety issues that have sparked the most recent debate. Let’s examine each of these conditions in more detail.

What Is BIA-ALCL?

BIA-ALCL is an immune system-related cancer that is typically detected in the fluid and scar tissue surrounding the breast implant. It is not breast cancer, even though it happens in the breast. The FDA first discovered the connection between BIA-ALCL and breast implants in 2010, and subsequent research has shown that there is still little chance of getting BIA-ALCL.

Textured vs. Smooth Breast Implants

Breast implants can have a textured or smooth surface. Smooth, round implants make up the majority of implants used in breast augmentation procedures. In order to prevent rotation within the implant pocket, anatomically shaped implants are textured.

Researchers discovered that textured implants have a higher risk of BIA-ALCL than smooth implants, as the FDA continued to review data of BIA-ALCL cases abroad. The FDA specifically connected the risk of developing BIA-ALCL to Allergan’s BIOCELL textured implants. Allergan voluntarily decided to take these devices off the market in July 2018. The FDA did not advise women with these implants to have them removed if they were not exhibiting symptoms of BIA-ALCL because the risk was so low.

BIA-ALCL Symptoms

Patients should make an appointment with their physician if they exhibit any of the following symptoms:

  • Unknown enlargement of the breasts
  • Anguish
  • Breast or underarm lump
  • Rash
  • Breast hardening
  • A substantial buildup of fluid

To maintain the integrity of your implants, you should still have an MRI or ultrasound every two years, even if you don’t experience these symptoms.

What Is BII?

Breast implant illness, or BII, is an unrelated condition that has gained attention due to the emergence of BIA-ALCL. Women with this condition experience a range of emotional and physical symptoms that they attribute to their breast implants. BII has not been identified as a distinct diagnosis by researchers examining the relationship between implants and women exhibiting these symptoms. Any time after receiving implants, even years later, the symptoms could appear.

Among these symptoms are:

  • Joint and muscle pain
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Memory and concentration problems
  • Breathing problems
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Rashes and skin problems
  • Dry mouth and dry eyes
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Headaches
  • Hair loss
  • Gastrointestinal problems

Although it is unclear if breast implants are the cause of these symptoms, several studies show that after having their implants and capsules removed, most women experience a partial or total improvement in their symptoms.

If You’re Concerned About BII

Because the symptoms of BII are similar to those of other conditions, your doctor may order blood tests to rule out other potential causes. The doctor might suggest implant removal if the tests reveal no other causes.

Our practice completely supports your decision to have your implants removed. Selecting a board-certified plastic surgeon with experience performing breast implant revision surgery is crucial because it is more complex than the original breast augmentation procedure.

Five Things You Should Know Before Getting Breast Implants

Breast implants, also referred to as augmentation mammoplasty, represent one of the most frequently performed cosmetic procedures on women.

Women elect to undergo breast augmentation surgery for various reasons:

  • To augment small breasts
  • To regain contour and volume following breastfeeding or weight reduction
  • To enhance self-assurance
  • To enhance the appearance of garments
  • To reconstruct breasts after mastectomies
  • To achieve symmetry in asymmetrical breasts

If you are contemplating breast implants, it is crucial to conduct thorough research and choose a highly reputable and experienced surgeon to perform the procedure. Here are five essential facts you should be aware of before undergoing breast augmentation surgery.

1) Implants Can Be Placed Beneath the Breast Tissue or Beneath the Muscle

Your surgeon will thoroughly review each option with you during your consultation. Implants positioned beneath the muscle are gaining popularity due to the perception that this technique provides a more natural appearance. An additional advantage of positioning implants beneath the muscle is that they are less likely to interfere with mammogram imaging. There is also some evidence indicating that this option is less likely to lead to the hardening of the implants over time.

2) They Can Be Made of Silicone or Saline

The outer shell of breast implants is composed of silicone; however, since 2005, the filling may consist of either saline solution or silicone gel. Substantial advancements have been achieved in breast implant technology over the past decade, and the FDA has determined that both silicone and saline types are safe. Your physician will review the advantages and disadvantages of each option during your consultation.

3) They Can Be Smooth or Textured

Breast implant shells are manufactured through two distinct methods, depending on the patient’s preference. Smooth implants are soft and consistent, permitting greater mobility, which many individuals perceive as contributing to a more natural appearance. Textured implants are uniquely coated to enhance the surface area, allowing the capsule to develop within them. This produces a more pronounced tightening effect with reduced mobility.

4) It’s a Major Operation

Breast augmentation is a major surgical procedure typically conducted under general anesthesia and requires approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. Following the procedure, you are likely to experience drowsiness and disorientation, and it will be necessary for you to remain at the clinic until you have been officially discharged.

Adhering to the prescribed procedure, it is essential to follow your surgeon’s guidance and to avoid engaging in any strenuous activities for the upcoming weeks. The likelihood of complications is significantly diminished in patients who receive adequate rest and avoid overexertion following surgery.

5) There Can Be Complications

Some discomfort and redness may occur in the days immediately following breast augmentation surgery and can be managed with analgesics and rest. Nonetheless, certain complications may arise, such as capsular contracture, malposition, rupture, infection, and anaplastic large cell lymphoma. You must select only a reputable surgeon who is prepared to address any questions you may have and who performs their procedures in a sterile environment.
