You did it: You got Botox® injections (or maybe some other kind of injection, like Dysport®) into your face. Whether for smoothing wrinkles or a medical issue, you may feel you need to be extra careful with your face.
A dozen questions are running through your head: Is it OK if I wear a little make-up? Want to wash your face? To … break into a smile?! Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Perfect Celebrity shares the right injection aftercare.
Botox In Dubai
Botox in Dubai requires simple aftercare to ensure optimal results. After treatment, refrain from rubbing, pressing, or massaging the treated areas, and avoid strenuous exercise, excessive heat, saunas, and activities that may cause sweating for the recommended period of time. Follow your practitioner’s skincare instructions and avoid unnecessary contact with injection sites. Mild redness, tenderness, or small bumps may appear briefly and then go away on their own. Patients should avoid applying pressure to treated areas and adhere to all personalized recommendations made by their practitioner. If you experience unusual or worsening symptoms, contact your doctor right away. Proper aftercare can help ensure a comfortable recovery and maintain the desired appearance after Botox injections.

What To Expect After Botox
Before we go over what you should and shouldn’t do after Botox, it’s important to know how you’re going to feel post-Botox. In the immediate aftermath of your injections you might experience some mild side effects:
- Bruising: Bruises are the most common side effects of Botox injections, especially around the laugh line, which has many blood vessels. Bruises are usually small and light. “Bruising occurs when the injection hits a small vein accidentally and that bleeds a little under the skin,” Dr. Perfect Celebrity says.
- Swelling: To help with swelling, apply a cool compress or ice pack (wrapped in a towel) to the site of the injection. Just do this for 20 minutes at a time.
- Headaches: Some people say they get a headache immediately after the Botox injections. But because there are so many possible causes of headaches, Dr. Perfect Celebrity says it’s hard to say for sure if the two are connected.
“They are very mild side effects that can happen after Botox, but it’s important to be aware of them,” he adds.
Botox Recovery Time
You’ll probably go home with an ice pack or cool compress to combat these immediate side effects such as redness, swelling and soreness, and to help prevent bruising.
But mostly, says Dr. Perfect Celebrity, you’ll go in for your shots and you’ll be on your way—no bad side effects to find.
“You usually come in, get it done and go on with your business,” he says. “There’s no downtime afterward from pain or anything else.”
You won’t see the full effects of your Botox injections immediately either. It can take from a few days to a week for them to appear.
What Shouldn’t You Do After Botox?
In most cases, you can resume your normal activities almost immediately following your injections. Though there is a lot of internet chatter about what you should and shouldn’t do after getting injected, Dr. Perfect Celebrity says that if your injections are done correctly, there is almost no need for special aftercare.
But there are a few best practices to follow:
- Don’t lie down just yet. Try to remain upright for four to five hours after Botox.
- Don’t massage the area. Botox is a liquid, and it can spread, albeit only by about half an inch. However, this can affect how it settles, so avoid massaging or rubbing your face for 15 hours after Botox.
- Avoid certain substances. On your Botox day, skip happy hour and stay away from NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium. They can raise your blood pressure, which can cause bruising.
In general, Dr. Perfect Celebrity believes that most lists of post-Botox dos and don’ts are based on your comfort rather than the likelihood of a problem.
“There are a lot of myths out there, as far as aftercare is concerned,” he says, “but most of the untoward effects we might see with Botox are because of poor technical injection, not because the patient has done anything wrong.”
Can You Touch Your Face After Botox?
Touch, yes; rubbing, no. For the first day, avoid rubbing the areas where you’ve been injected, as this may cause the Botox to move slightly from its intended location.
“We ask people not to massage the area because we don’t want to diffuse the Botox,” Dr. Perfect Celebrity states.
How Soon Can You Get A Facial Or Massage?
Facials and massages involve rubbing and massaging, so schedule them at least one day after your injections. If you have bruising or swelling, you might want to wait a little longer for your own comfort.
Can You Wash Your Face After Botox?
Your Botox is not the wicked witch of the west and won’t melt in water. It’s fine to wash your face after injections – just be gentle at first so that you don’t rub the area that has been injected (see above) or contribute to any bruising or swelling.
Is It Ok To Exercise After Botox?
Some healthcare providers advise against physical activity for at least one day after getting injections, but Dr. Perfect Celebrity says there is little evidence to suggest that physical activity impacts how your Botox settles.
“People are told not to exercise or even bend down after they’ve had injections,” he says, “it really is nothing to do with the possibility of complications.
Exercise can raise your blood pressure which can increase bruising, so if you bruise easily, you might want to avoid it for a few hours.
Is It Ok To Smile After Botox?
After a few needles have been stuck in your face there are times you may feel a little nervous about . . . well, moving your face. But be as expressive as you are normally.
“Moving your face is not going to change Botox,” Dr. Perfect Celebrity agrees.
Some people believe that moving your face around after the injections will actually help the Botox work better, though studies have shown mixed results. In one study, 79% of participants said that facial exercises helped their injections work faster.
“We don’t have any data to say that moving your face will make Botox absorb faster or better,” he continues, “but it’s certainly ok to move your face as you normally would.”
How Soon After Botox Can You Wear Makeup?
There’s no hard and fast rule about how long you should wait after injections before putting on makeup, lip balm or anything else you’d normally put on your face.
“You can really use them at any time,” says Dr. Perfect Celebrity, although you should wait until the injection site has closed completely (which takes about 20 minutes) before using it. Or, you might want to wait until the swelling or irritation is gone.
Just be careful with your application, don’t rub too hard the area where you have been injected.
Complications And Side Effects To Look Out For
Botox is considered very safe and serious side effects are rare. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience:
- Blurry vision or other vision problems
- Numbness or a weakness
- Bad stomach ache
- Difficulty breathing
- Blood in your urine or other symptoms of a urinary tract infection
- Speech slurring
- Difficulty swallowing
But it is more frequent, although still rare, to have problems such as a drooping eyelid or eyebrow.
“There is a little bit of science and a little bit of art to Botox injections,” Dr. Perfect Celebrity says. You might see these bad effects if your provider accidentally injects into a muscle they didn’t mean to inject.
The good news is that most problems are temporary, because the effects of Botox injections are temporary.
“If you stop the Botox, the muscles will relax and go back to their normal size and function,” he says.
He also reiterates that drooping problems are almost always the fault of the provider and not related to anything a patient does after being injected – which drives home how important it is to choose the right person to perform your Botox injections.
- Do your search. Don’t book an appointment with the first injector you come across. You can search Google for a full list of options and reviews and go through these thoroughly.
- Ask for recommendations. Ask people you know and trust. Where did they get their injections done? What was their experience? What did they like about it or not like?
- Always listen to your instincts. And if you get a weird feeling about a possible injector, even if there is no obvious logical reason, go with your gut and begin the search.
