Recovering From Breast Augmentation

Recovering from Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation recovery is a gradual process that requires patience and proper postoperative care. Some swelling, bruising and discomfort are normal for the first few weeks and will gradually improve as healing occurs. Follow your surgeonโ€™s instructions, wear a supportive surgical bra, and avoid strenuous activity for the best recovery. Most patients are able to return to their normal daily activities within a few weeks and final results continue to change over the next several months.

Instructions For Recovering From Breast Augmentation

Night Of Breast Augmentation Surgery

  • Movement Matters. Make sure to get out of bed the minute youโ€™re out of surgery and get moving. If youโ€™re lying in bed or on the couch, be sure to move your legs and ankles. Breathe deeply often to keep your lungs clear.
  • Sleep. Sleep on your back with your head elevated at an angle of about 40-50 degrees (2-4 pillows). Donโ€™t sleep on one side. Raise your body to lessen swelling. Keep this up for one week.

Medications After Breast Augmentation

  • Suffering. You will be given a prescription for a pain medication for post-operative pain control. Tylenol is available if your post-operative pain is not severe and you would prefer to take it instead of the medication prescribed. Don’t take the Tylenol with the pain medication – most of the time the medication you are prescribed will have Tylenol in it. Do not take more than 5000 mg of Tylenol in a 1 day period. Take medication with food to help prevent nausea.
  • Nauseation. If you are feeling nauseous (a common side effect of some stronger pain medications and after general anesthesia), we recommend that you take your nausea medication. They may have given you a patch of scopolamine to put behind your ear. This provides anti-nausea medication for three days post placement.
  • Constipation. Constipation can occur when taking narcotic pain relievers. Recommended is Miralax or other over the counter laxatives. Donโ€™t wait until youโ€™re constipated. Start with narcotics for treatment.
  • Avoid certain medicines. Use only medications approved or prescribed by your surgeon. Do not take medications with aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Ibuprofen, others) for 2.5 weeks before, and after surgery. These drugs encourage bleeding.
  • Substances to Steer Clear of. Don’t drink alcohol, smoke or have caffeine as these will greatly slow the healing process.

Nutrition After Breast Augmentation

  • Diet. The best diet after surgery is a light low-fat diet. You may resume a regular diet after surgery as long as you do not have nausea or vomiting.
  • Hydration. Drink 7-9 glasses of water a day to stay hydrated. Do not drink alcohol for two weeks and while you are on pain medication.

Activity After Breast Augmentation

  • Exercise. 3-3.5 weeks after surgery you can resume light physical activity. Donโ€™t forget to start easy and work your way back to your previous level of exercise. You can begin more vigorous exercise at 5-7 weeks, or when our plastic surgeons recommend you to. Just be aware that swelling could be temporarily worse with exercise.
  • Movement of the arm. Only use your arms for daily activities such as brushing your teeth, eating, and shampooing your hair. Avoid strenuous activity and do not lift more than 6 lbs. โ€œLet pain be your boundary.โ€ If it hurts, don’t do it.
  • Breast Surgery. You will be asked to wear a special bra for the first week after your operation and then as advised by your surgeon. The bra should be snug but not too tight. The surgical bra is made to provide support during your recovery from surgery.
  • Driving. Do not drive or make important decisions until you have been off your pain medication for 1 day. Use good judgment.
  • Get back to work. Most patients will need time off work of about 6-7 days depending on the nature of their work. It can also be good to start out with a light schedule, or even part-time, when you go back to work.
  • Sex. You can resume sexual activity whenever you feel ready, there are no restrictions. The incisions should be well healed. Usually one month is enough for patients.
  • Displacement Movements. Usually, after a breast augmentation by one of our plastic surgeons, breast exercises are not needed unless your surgeon tells you to do them. This is especially true if anatomical shaped implants have been used. Such maneuvers are likely to malrotate the shaped devices. If your follow-up evaluations indicate that you need to stretch the lower portion of the breasts, you may be advised to do these exercises. Our plastic surgeons will give you any instructions you need at that time.
  • Sleep. For the first few weeks it is recommended to sleep on your side or on your back to avoid putting too much pressure on the breasts.

Bathing After Breast Augmentation

  • Taking a bath. You may take a shower with assistance the day after surgery. Take your bra off. The incisions have a waterproof dressing and need no special attention. After your shower, put your bra back on.
  • Hot Tubs, Baths & Swimming Pools. No tub baths or Jacuzzi (until your incisions have healed and approved by your surgeon) usually about 2.5 weeks. For hot tubs, it is best to wait a month, because they usually develop more bacteria than regular chlorinated swimming pools.

How To Take Care Of Your Incisions After Breast Augmentation

  • Incisiones. You will have a waterproof dressing over your incisions. No dressing changes or incision care required. At your first postop visit the dressing will be removed and tape applied. This special brown tape actually helps heal scars and makes your scar look better. Keep the brown tape over your incision sites for as long as our plastic surgeons recommend.
  • Stitches. All sutures are absorbable.
  • Scar ointment. The scars are small and hidden in the breast fold. It may take a year or more to recover. When your incisions are fully healed and your doctor has given you the green light, you can start using silicon based ointment on your scars to help them heal better.

What To Expect After Breast Augmentation

  • Bruising. You should have bruises afterwards. Most bruises will be gone in around 2-2.5 weeks. As it starts to get better the bruise will go from a purplish color to a yellow / green color.
  • Puffiness. The swelling will mainly be in the top half of the breasts. Swelling is the reason for the feeling that the implants are high but can take 2-4 weeks to improve. When the swelling goes down the implants look like they drop into a lower position.
  • Itch. It is normal for the incision sites to itch some for a few days. Iโ€™ll take Benadryl for that.
  • Ache. Following surgery, you should expect to experience tightness, pressure, soreness, itchiness, and fatigue for several days to weeks as your breast implants heal and your skin and muscle adjust.
  • Site of Implant. During healing there can be swelling, which may make the implants appear high, hard and uneven in position. The implants should be much closer to their final result at 5-6 weeks with significantly less swelling.
  • Sensory Changes in the Skin. You may have less or more sensation in your nipples, incision sites and breast tissue. It is normal. Normal sensation will return in a few weeks to a few months.
  • Crackling/sloshing noises. Your body takes time to absorb it. This is normal with this type of surgery and leaves air and fluid. These sounds are normal and will resolve in 6-7 days after a breast augmentation.
  • Buying new bras. We suggest you wait 7 โ€“ 10 weeks before buying your new size bra. During this waiting period the swelling will go down and you will be in a better position to assess your bra size. Most patients opt to wear their surgical bra at night only after the first post op visit.

Do Notโ€™s After Breast Augmentation

  • DO NOT put hydrogen peroxide on the cut. Post op dressings until follow-up.
  • DO NOT soak in baths, Jacuzzis or hot tubs until all incisions are completely healed.
  • DO NOT take Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen or other blood thinners until your surgeon tells you it is safe.
  • DO NOT use heating pads or ice packs on treated areas unless instructed by your surgeon.

Emergency Situations After Breast Augmentation

  • Symptoms of Infection: Redness spreading, swelling increasing, drainage or pus drainage increasing, pain and warmth at incision site increasing. Temperature at or above 102 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Heavy bleeding: If the dressings are soaked with bright red blood. If the dressings are being changed very often.
  • Other emergencies: Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. Chest pain. Lightheadedness that doesn’t improve quickly. Severe vomiting. Pain or swelling that is not the same on both legs.

Shopping List After Breast Augmentation

  • Prescriptions: have your prescriptions filled prior to your surgery date.
  • Arnica: An herbal supplement that can help reduce swelling and bruising.
  • Laxative: To relieve constipation caused by anesthesia or narcotic pain medications.

Downtime For Desk Jobs After Breast Augmentation

Most patients with desk jobs can safely return to work five to seven days after breast augmentation if they feel well and their job does not require heavy lifting or strenuous physical activity. Some patients may choose to take extra time off depending on their recovery and how comfortable they feel. Avoid heavy lifting, repetitive upper-body movements and reaching overhead for the first few weeks. Short walking breaks during the workday can help improve circulation and reduce stiffness. People with physically demanding jobs often need additional time to recover before resuming their full duties at work.
