Frequently Asked QuestionS

Here are the answers to some of the most common questions we receive from our surgical weight loss candidates. If you have other questions, please call or fill out our interest form.

Who Is A Candidate For Weight Loss (Bariatric) Surgery?

Perfect Doctors Clinic performs weight loss surgery for adults age 19 or older who generally are approved by consensus of our multidisciplinary team and typically:

  • Are good enough for major surgery
  • No problem with drugs or alcohol
  • Do not have uncontrolled psychological disorders
  • Don’t use tobacco.
  • Meet BMI Criteria: The latest guidelines call for a BMI of 31 with health conditions or BMI of 36 but this criteria may be different with insurance requirements.
  • Used other treatments for weight loss with no results
  • Know the surgery and the risks involved

The decision for bariatric surgery should be made only after all other attempts at weight loss have been exhausted. Above all, patients of the Perfect Doctors Clinic must be committed to the lifestyle changes and lifetime follow-up that are necessary to achieve the best possible outcomes from their weight-loss surgery.

Insurance benefits verified by calling insurance provider directly, eligibility and plan specific.

How Long Do I Have To Wait Until I Can Have Surgery?

Your insurance company will dictate a series of clearances that need to be done prior to surgery. No coverage? We’ll finance it.

Will My Insurance Cover The Weight Loss Surgery?

Some insurance policies do not cover weight loss treatments like surgery, depending on the policy. Other plans will have some requirements before surgery will be covered, such as a medically supervised diet history and/or psychological evaluation. All plans have varying needs. Call your insurance company to find out more. Get the insurance company’s requirements in writing and record all contact with the insurance company.

How Long Will I Have To Stay In The Clinic?

Laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, duodenal switch, and sleeve gastrectomy are usually performed with a hospital stay of 2 to 3 days. If you are having revisional surgery, the normal hospital stay is about the same, but it may vary depending upon the specifics.

When Can I Resume Normal Activities And/Or Return To Work?

If your work is not active, you can probably return to work in 3 weeks. If your work is physically demanding, you will likely be able to return in 4-7 weeks. You should be back to normal activities in 2-3 weeks as opposed to five to seven weeks with traditional surgery.

Will I Lose My Hair?

You may lose hair or have thinning hair in the 4-6 months following your surgery. But this is often a transient condition.

How Will My Diet Change After The Surgery?

How much food you will be able to eat will vary greatly. Postoperatively, food intake is limited to 2-3 fluid ounces per meal to allow the stomach to heal properly. You will be given exact instructions for your diet.

Will I Need To Take Vitamins After Surgery?

The rest of your life you will have to take vitamins. After your surgery you will start taking a chewable multi-vitamin daily, vitamin B-12 and calcium citrate.

What Is The Average Weight Loss I Can Expect After Bariatric Surgery?

Results of weight loss differ from one person to another.

How Big Will My Stomach Pouch Be After The Surgery?

The stomach pouch is designed to accommodate about one ounce. The natural surgical inflammation makes it a little stiff for the first few months. The stomach pouch is a little larger around 13-19 months post surgery as the inflammation lessens. Most patients will have a meal capacity of approximately 5 to 7 fluid ounces.

Will I Have To Change My Medications? Will I Be Able To Stop Certain Medications?

Some medications (blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) may not be needed at some point after bariatric surgery. Most medicines will still be effective after surgery.

How Many Sessions Are Typically Required For Weight Loss Surgery?

Weight loss surgery is usually performed in a single surgical procedure, which means that only one operation is required to achieve the desired results. However, the overall treatment process consists of several appointments, including the initial consultation, pre-operative assessments, nutritional counseling, surgery day, and several post-operative follow-up visits. These follow-up sessions are critical for monitoring healing, tracking weight loss progress, and ensuring that dietary and lifestyle changes are properly implemented. In some cases, patients may need additional consultations with dietitians, fitness specialists, or psychologists to ensure long-term success. The number of appointments varies based on the type of bariatric surgery and the patient’s specific health needs.

Can I See Weight Loss Surgery Before-And-After Photos Of Previous Patients?

Yes, most reputable weight loss surgery clinics show before-and-after photos of previous patients during the consultation process. These images can help you better understand the potential outcomes of procedures like gastric sleeve surgery and gastric bypass surgery. Reviewing actual patient results allows you to observe changes in body shape, weight loss, and overall physical transformation over time. It’s important to remember that results differ from person to person depending on age, starting weight, lifestyle habits, and adherence to post-surgical guidelines. Your surgeon can help you understand which results are most relevant to your situation and set realistic expectations for your weight loss journey.

Are You Board-Certified Or Specially Trained?

Choosing a board-certified and specially trained weight loss surgeon is critical to achieving safe and successful results. Board certification indicates that a surgeon has completed advanced education, specialized training, and rigorous examinations in their field. Surgeons who specialize in bariatric procedures receive additional training on weight management, minimally invasive surgical techniques, and obesity-related health issues. During your consultation, you should feel free to ask about your surgeon’s qualifications, certifications, experience, and the number of weight loss procedures they have completed. Qualified surgeons disclose their credentials and explain how their expertise enhances patient safety and success.

What Weight Loss Surgery Symptoms Should Concern Me?

While mild discomfort, fatigue, swelling, and temporary digestive changes are normal after weight loss surgery, certain symptoms should be reported to your surgeon right away. Severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, a high fever, difficulty breathing, chest pain, excessive bleeding, redness around incision sites, or infection symptoms are all potential warning signs. Dehydration symptoms such as dizziness, weakness, or an inability to tolerate fluids necessitate immediate medical attention. Early detection of complications can greatly improve treatment outcomes and lower risks. Your surgical team will provide detailed post-operative instructions and explain which symptoms are normal and require immediate evaluation to ensure a safe recovery.

What Is The Total Cost Of The Weight Loss Surgery?

The total cost of weight loss surgery depends on a number of factors, including the type of procedure performed, the surgeon’s experience, hospital or clinic fees, anesthesia costs, and pre- and post-operative care needs. Additional costs may include medical testing, nutritional counseling, medications, and follow-up appointments. More complex procedures or surgeries performed in highly specialized facilities may incur higher overall costs. During your consultation, ask for a detailed breakdown of all expenses so you know exactly what is included in the treatment package. Some clinics provide financing or payment plans to make weight loss surgery more affordable for eligible patients.

What Is The Weight Loss Surgery Recovery Time?

The recovery time following weight loss surgery varies depending on the procedure performed and the patient’s overall health. Most patients can resume light daily activities within two to three weeks of surgery, but more strenuous activities should be avoided for five to seven weeks. During recovery, patients eat a carefully planned diet that progresses from liquids to soft foods and then to regular meals. Regular check-ups help to monitor healing and nutritional status. Although physical recovery takes a few weeks, adjusting to new eating habits and lifestyle changes is a continuous process. Long-term success is dependent on maintaining a healthy diet, exercising, and following your surgeon’s recommendations.
