Is It Safe To Have Under Eye Or Tear Trough Filler Injections?

Under-eye fillers, which some people call tear trough or infraorbital fillers, are one of the most popular treatments I do. Is it safe? Read on to find out what I think…

People like this process because it can make eye bags and dark circles under the eyes look smaller or go away without surgery. There isn’t much time off after the treatment (if any), and the results can endure for a year or longer.

But is it safe? In brief, I think the answer is yes, but there are several things to keep in mind. Read below to find out why.

This blog post is not meant to provide you particular medical advice; it is meant to share my significant professional experience with fillers for under-eye bags. Everyone is unique and may need a different strategy. There are currently no FDA-approved fillers for under-eye use, but doctors can use products for “off-label” purposes, such as filling in tear troughs.

How Can You Have A Safe Under-Eye Filler Injection?

No injector can promise you that any operation is completely safe. But there are ways to lower those risks to a level that most people would find tolerable. I have personally undergone the treatment because I knew it was safe based on what I knew and had done.

I employ certain methods to make the surgery safer (such cannulas, low-pressure injection, clean technique, and understanding anatomy), but as a patient, you may also do things to make it safer for yourself.

Read on to learn about the circumstances that could make the tear trough filler operation safer:

Find An Experienced Provider

Your cosmetic injector should have worked with under-eye fillers before, be able to show you pictures of outcomes from other clients, and be able to explain their qualifications and experience in a way that makes you feel comfortable.

Avoid Needle Injections If Possible

I think the cannula method is safer for the area under the eyes. This is not yet fully supported by the literature. I have done many under-eye injections with needles without any problems before the cannula technique was introduced. However, I now prefer the cannula because its blunt tip makes it less likely to inject filler into a blood vessel, which is probably safer.

Avoid Commercial Filler Products That Are Permanent

Silicone, acrylic, and calcium-based fillers might cause more difficulties under the eyes, and if there is a problem, these materials can’t be dissolved.

Find A Provider That Really Knows The Under-Eyes

In my perspective, surgeons who do surgery near the eyes (oculoplastic, facial plastic, dermatologic) know more about the anatomy in this sensitive area than other types of surgeons.

What Are The Risks Associated With Facial And Under-Eye Fillers?

There is always a chance of bruising and swelling with filler injections. In my experience, using a cannula makes it less likely that you may bruise after getting filler beneath your eyes.

You could get lumps and bumps, bluish discolouration (Tyndall), and visible filler material. These problems can be treated with massage or an enzyme injection (hyaluronidase or Hylenex) to break down the filler. The fact that HA gel fillers can be reversed makes them safer.

Hyaluronic acid is already in our skin, thus HA gel fillers don’t cause allergies, irritation, or infections very often. This is why you don’t need to test your skin before getting HA fillers. But if hygienic methods aren’t employed during the injection, there could be inflammation or infections. Some people think that biofilms (bacterial growth) can cause low-grade, long-term illnesses. Granulomas (inflammatory lumps) can happen when the body reacts to some fillers’ cross-linking process because of an allergy or immune system reaction. I think that the cross-linking in Juvederm Voluma might make a tiny but important number of people inflamed (this has been mentioned in the literature), therefore I never use Voluma under the eyes.

The most catastrophic and feared complication of under-eye fillers is injecting them into a blood vessel or compressing a blood vessel, which can lead to problems with circulation. If the filler material got into the central retinal artery, it could cause vision loss. This is really rare, and I think it’s very rarer if a cannula is utilized.

A 2016 review article in the Dermatologic Surgery Journal looked with all the peer-reviewed studies on visual problems caused by facial fillers. The most prevalent places to get these problems were between the brows or glabella (40%), the nose (27%), the nasolabial (15%), and the forehead (15%). The top four injection sites didn’t include under-eye or tear trough injections.

Should You Get Under Eye Filler?

It’s clear that the choice to get a cosmetic operation is a personal one. If you have dark circles or bags under your eyes and are thinking about a non-surgical therapy, I urge that you go to a very skilled injector to obtain the best advise for your unique condition.

8 Benefits of Under Eye Filler Injections

While under-eye fillers come with certain risks, they also offer several benefits when performed by a qualified professional.

Reduction Of Hollows And Dark Circles

Fillers for under the eyes can help make hollows or tear troughs look less noticeable. These can make you look older or more fatigued. Fillers make dark circles less noticeable by increasing volume and smoothing out the region under the eyes. This makes you look younger and more refreshed.

Restoration Of Volume And Fullness

As you get older, your genetics, or your way of life, the volume and fat pads under your eyes can go away, making them look sunken or hollow. Under-eye fillers put volume back into the area, making it look younger and more refreshed.

Improvement In Skin Texture And Hydration

Hyaluronic acid, which is found in many under-eye fillers, draws in and holds onto moisture, which helps keep skin hydrated and makes it feel better. This makes the skin around the eyes smoother and more flexible, which makes fine wrinkles and crepiness less noticeable.

Natural-Looking Results

At Perfect Doctors Clinic, our skilled staff can use under-eye fillers to make your eyes look more natural. The fillers are carefully injected to improve the shape and look of the area under the eyes without making it look too full or fake.

Non-Surgical And Minimal Downtime

Injections of filler under the eyes are not very intrusive and usually don’t hurt much. Most people can go back to their normal activities right following the treatment, which can often be done in a quick office visit. There may be some transient swelling or bruising, but cosmetics can usually hide it.

Customized And Tailored Treatment

The area under each person’s eyes is different, therefore filler treatments can be tailored to meet specific needs and get the results that are wanted. Our skilled practitioners carefully look at the patient’s anatomy and needs to make sure that each treatment is tailored to them.

Long-Lasting Results

Results vary from person to person, but under-eye fillers usually make things look better right away. The effects can last anywhere from a few months to more than a year, depending on the type of filler used and other circumstances. Touch-ups every now and again can help keep the results.

Improved Self-Confidence

When the area under the eyes looks fresh and young again, it can boost self-esteem and confidence. Being more comfortable and happy with how you look can have a good effect on many parts of your life.
